Most schools in America place a lot of emphasis on Physical Education, and with good reason. Physical education is a class dreaded by some students, loved by others, and necessary for everyone. Though it may not seem like it, gym class teaches students the importance of teamwork and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, studies have shown that students that exercise are more alert and academically motivated.

In gym class, students often play sports involving a team effort. Working well on a team is a skill that is critical for a teen to develop—especially if he/she is planning on going to college where teamwork in the classroom is required. Sports force students to learn to cooperate with other students, problem solve, and socialize amongst each other—all skills that are significant to succeed within the classroom. Students that learn to play on a team at a young age are likely to have an increased ability in communicating, working alongside other people, and solving problems in an effective manner.

In addition to social benefits, exercise plays a big role in preventing disease, injury, and obesity. Also, physical fitness has been shown to play a part in preserving an individuals mental health. Students that participate in physical activity miss less school and are generally more attentive in class due to the energy gained during exercise. In today’s society, many children and adults struggle with weight problems. Children who are exposed to exercise at a young age stay in better shape than children who are not exposed to exercise. Also, developing an interest in fitness at a young age means that the person is more likely to continue exercising in the future, thereby continuing a good habit and increasing their longevity. Without physical fitness, people may become prone to sickness at a young age and have difficulty performing well in academics and extra-curricular activities.

For children in elementary school, physical education may play an important role in establishing social skills, lasting friendships, and good habits. For students in high school, participation in sports increases academic capabilities, reinforces a positive mentality, and also helps with college applications and financial aid. It is very important for students of all ages, as well as parents, to recognize the importance of participating in fitness activities and living a healthy lifestyle. Every student should make their health and physical well being a main priority in their lives.

A healthy body is key to a healthy mind.
